Encourage Reading and Writing

Reading is so important for our children.  As your child starts reading, consider keeping a reading log.  This helps in three ways.

First, this helps with documentation for yourself to remind yourself of which books your child read or did not read.

Second, if you let them use this worksheet https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0rXTqFiCfXRUk5zYUFxWS1Ccmc/edit?usp=sharing , they can practice their handwriting.

Third, they are going to want to finish up the page and start a new one so this encourages even more reading.

Here are the reading logs I use.

Teacher Supply Event for Cobb County is Tuesday, Sept 30

The next Teacher Supply Event for Cobb County is Tuesday, Sept 30 from 5-6 pm.
For more info, please visit the website at www.cobbk12.org/teacherssupplystore.
Marta went to the one in August, and got a lot of good, free, teacher supply items - perfect

I am not sure if I will be able to make it or not, but I wanted to make sure that you all had access
to this info for the next one.

Also, if you have any questions regarding Letter of Intent or DOE home schooling questions, then callMr. Blenke at 404-463-1765 or email him at ablenke@doe.k12.ga.us. He was very helpful when I emailed him to email me a copy of my Letter of Intent that I could not seem to print from my computer.

UNG Federal Service Language Academy

The University of North Georgia (UNG) will host the fourth summer language academy for high school rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in June and July 2014.  The Federal Service Language Academy (FSLA) is a three-week residential program for students who are interested in an immersive intensive language experience, fitness, and exploring international-related careers with the federal government.  Last year 132 students from over 32 US states and three foreign countries successfully completed the FSLA.

During the two three-week sessions, students will be immersed in intensive language instruction in First-Year Arabic, Chinese, Russian, German, Korean, Portuguese or Second-Year Arabic, Chinese, Russian, German, Portuguese, and Korean from highly qualified teachers, participate in a daily fitness program, receive career counseling from federal agency representatives (CIA, DEA, FBI, State Department, Homeland Security, the Peace Corps and US Armed Forces), and possibly receive high school credit for successful completion of the academy.

Please forward this information to any high school teachers, counselors, or administrators in your contacts who may be interested in passing this information to their students and/or may be interested in an employment opportunity at the UNG Federal Service Language Academy.

What is "Gamification of Education"?
We know we learn best when we are engaged and having fun.  Our best teachers turned learning into games and that is exactly what software companies are creating today.

Check out the Gamification of Language Arts brought to you by Lego in the video below.  At the Aurora School, our elementary students love Legos.  With Lego StoryStarter, our students have more opportunities to expand their imagination and learn the essential elements of great stories at the same time.
